Art Direction

Last semester some details for art direction and continuity were overlooked because I had assumed Chrissie, as the director would consider them; whereas she had assumed that they would fall under my 'logistics' remit.
We had a discussion about this early in this project, to ensure those details were not overlooked again. We did not have an Art Director for this project, even though I tried to recruit one, so I asked Chrissie if she was going to be responsible for the visual look of the film, including art direction. She agreed to give guidance but asked me to take charge of listing and tracking our props and set dressing.

I made lists, with Chrissie of all the props and set dressing we would require. I then personally took charge of producing he following:

  • Prop photos and frames
  • Designed and printed an A2 poster of Gloria
  • Contributed and decorated some of my own chairs based on Chrissie's initial research for the character of Gloria.
  • Contributed books and DVDs from my own collection that I felt would suit the characters
  • Purchased other small set dressing items
  • Lent items form my home to the production (TV, DVD player, photo frames, hair and make up item, shoes, bags, and bric-a-brac to dress Gloria's room)
Chrissie provided some input on some of the items acquired for set dressing but others I had to take my initiate with.
The chairs I spray painted and re-upholstered

Books and DVDs I contributed form my own collection,
especially trying to suit them to the characters of Joe and Gloria
